Yale looked to have an easy game as they dominated the 1st period. They scored twice and led 11 to 5 in shots. The first was by defenseman Mitch Witek who scored on the power-play at 12:55. It was Witek’s 1st goal of the season. Then right wing Antoine Laganiere scored a late 1st period goal at 19:08. Yale seemed to have complete control of the game after one period. Midway through the 2nd period, they led in shots 18 to 6.
Just when they seemed like they were down and out, UMass Lowell suddenly came alive in the 2nd half of the 2nd. They scored twice in 14 seconds to tie the game and stun Yale. Center Riley Wetmore scored at 14:38 and center Joseph Pendenza at 14:52.
Yale controlled play in the 3rd period but could not get the go-ahead goal. The teams went to overtime with Yale leading in shots 40 to 18. Yale rode this momentum and finally got the game-winner at 6:59 when captain Andrew Miller slipped the puck in.
Yale head coach Keith Allain on Miller’s goal said, “To me, up until right now before we play Saturday night, that’s probably the biggest goal in the history of Yale hockey. Andrew has been a great player for us all four years, but he’s made a remarkable transformation into a leadership role this year.”
Quinnipiac had a much easier time than Yale. They raced out to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st period. Jordan Samuels-Thomas scored a power-play goal for Quinnipiac at 1:49. Center Ben Arnt followed with a goal at 5:07, and Jeremy Langlois added another at 11:19.
Quinnipiac had a little of a hiccup in the 2nd period. St Cloud State took advantage as Joey Benik scored at 6:25. But they came right back as winger Kellen Jones scored at 14:31 to make it 4-1. They went into a defensive shell in the 3rd period and cruised to the win.
Yale and Quinnipiac will match up at 7pm on Saturday at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
