Yale capped their improbable Cinderella run by capturing the NCAA Championship in men’s hockey with a 4-0 victory over #1 seed Quinnipiac, a team they had lost to three previous times this season.
This game was a goalie’s duel for almost the first 40 minutes as each was superb. Then Yale center Clinton Bourbonais slipped a backhander past a stunned Quinnipiac goalie Eric Hartzell with a mere 3.5 seconds left in the 2nd period. The late goal clearly deflated Quinnipiac.
The flood gates opened in the 3rd period as Yale notched three more goals. Winger Charles Orzetti had the first at 3:35. Yale captain Andrew Miller followed by scoring on the breakaway at 9:06. Jesse Root then added an empty-net goal at 13:02.
Yale goalie Jeff Malcolm was sensational in net making 36 saves.
