For this game, Reto Berra started in net for the Flames and Ray Emery for the Flyers.

The Flyers had a number of scoring chances in the 1st period but Reto Berra was there to stop them each time.  Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds looked to stuff the puck early on but the athletic Berra zipped across the crease to stone him.  Then late in the period, Simmonds and Brayden Schenn went in on a 2-on-1 but Berra again was up to the task.  Flyers led in shots 11 to 8 after one period.

Flyers forward Brayden Schenn finally beat Berra when he scored at 8:04 of the 2nd period after a number of good chances earlier to put the Flyers up 1-0.  Physicality picked up in this period as Zac Rinaldo had some booming hits.  Emery had a good period for the Flyers as he made several strong saves to keep the Flames off of the board.  Shots in their period were 11 to 4 Flames.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux said, “Ray Emery played unbelievable tonight.  He’s one of the reasons why we won.”

Flyers got an insurance goal at 4:04 of the 3rd period when Giroux snapped a shot that Scott Hartnell tipped past Berra.  Emery continued his stellar play making several more terrific stops.  Flames ruined the shutout at 17:34 when Matt Stajan blasted one in but were unable to get the tying goal.

Emery on the win said, “During the last stretch of six or seven games we’ve tightened up and really not given teams that much.  I think it was a great stretch heading into this break.  We talked about it before those six or seven games that we could either put ourselves in a good position or play ourselves out of it.  Fortunately, we’ve put ourselves in a pretty good spot going further in the year.”

He added, “I think the team is getting comfortable with the way we are expected to play. I think the rest of the year is not so much easier, but you get into the playoff battles and you get those competitive juices flowing. I think the tough part is out of the way, the tough months are normally January and February and it gets a bit long.”

Flyers head coach on the win said, “The first period I was okay with.  I thought that we came out and we competed and we worked for the most part.  The second period I thought we got outworked.  And the third period I thought we came out again and worked and competed for most of the period.  At the end we let them come at us a little bit too much, they made it 2-1 and we ended up closing the deal.   But probably the last five, six minutes I think we were just back, just back a little bit, not being aggressive, not playing the game properly.”

The Flyers’ next game is after the Olympics on Thursday February 27th, when they host the San Jose Sharks.

One smaller gripe is the inability to set the date and time of the post. For example, a website about dating might post an article from a ‘money tips’ website that lists ways to save money on a date.
