The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Buffalo Sabres 7-2.  Claude Giroux had 5 assists.  Both Max Talbot and Wayne Simmonds each scored 2 goals.  Scott Hartnell had a goal and 3 assists.

This was the 3rd time this season these two teams played.  The Flyers won the 1st two.  They play the 4th and final time this season on April 5th in Philly again.

The Flyers played without a number of regular players.  James van Riemsdyk remained on the injured list recovering from a concussion.  They were also missing forward Jaromir Jagr due to the flu and defenseman Andrej Meszaros due to an upper body injury.  Forward Zac Rinaldo missed the game because of a suspension.

For this game, Jhonas Enroth started in net for the Sabres and Ilya Bryzgalov for the Flyers.

Flyers defensemen pairings:

The Flyers had another flat 1st period at home giving up two bad goals.  Jason Pominville buried a wide-open shot to give Sabres a 1-0 lead at 5:15 of the 1st period.  Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers fed a nice pass to Pominville on the play.  Then a slapshot by Thomas Vanek at 9:30 made it 2-0 Sabres.

The Flyers exploded in the 2nd period with 4 goals.  Max Talbot got the Flyers on the board with a nice tip-in of a Braydon Coburn shot at 0:54.  It was Talbot’s 15th goal of the season.  Then Wayne Simmonds scored on the power-play at 3:32 to tie the game 2-2.  Simmonds then scored again at 6:49.  It was his 20th of the season.  Ryan Miller subsequently replaced Enroth in net for the Sabres.  Erik Gustafsson greeted him with his 1st NHL goal at 13:48.  Jakub Voracek had a nice set-up for Gus on the goal.  Flyers led 4-2 at the 2nd intermission.  It was also a costly period for the Flyers as two forwards, Danny Briere and Tom Sestito, both suffered injuries that caused them to miss the rest of the game.

The Flyers continued to pour it on in the 3rd period.  They added 3 more goals.  Talbot scored his 2nd goal of game at 3:58.  Voracek scored at 4:31 and Scott Hartnell notched his 27th goal of the season at 9:25 to make it 7-2.  It was an impressive win after a lousy start.

Talbot on the win said, “The first period was embarrassing.  It was definitely not the image that our team plays like, especially in front of our fans. It was nice to start going after this…When you see things starting to roll in the right direction and the momentum start going in our way… I think we proved to ourselves that when we play the right way we are a really dangerous team and this is the way we need to play moving on here.”

Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette said, “I think there is a lot of confidence in the way we play the game, when we play with our identity and we play with passion, and I think the players know that as well.  We’re a hard team to play against when we’re moving north and we’re skating hard.”
The Flyers next game is Saturday at home vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins.
