The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Dallas Stars 3-1 in a hard-fought battle between division leaders at the Wells Fargo Center.  This was the 1st of 2 meetings between the Flyers and the Stars this season.  They play next in Dallas on March 19th.  For this game, Kari Lehtonen started in net for the Stars and Brian Boucher for the Flyers.

The Flyers started the game at a blistering pace getting a 2-on-1 right after the opening draw.  They had the Stars back on their skates and forced them to take an early penalty at 3:12.  The Stars were able to kill it off though and then settled into the game.  At 9:05, Flyer forward James Van Riemsdyk got a breakaway but could not solve Lehtonen.  The Flyers finally got one by Lehtonen at 18:40 when defenseman Andrej Meszaros wristed one in from the top of the left circle.  It was a strong period for the Flyers as they led 1-0 and out-shot the Stars 13 to 9 after one.

The Flyers added to their lead early in the 2nd period scoring at 1:19 when Darroll Powe beat Lehtonen short-side while short-handed.  The Stars finally scored at 12:07 when center Mike Ribeiro came out from behind the net uncontested and fed Brenden Morrow.  The Flyers had suffered a little bit of a lull before this goal.  Overall, they did not really have as much intensity this period as they did in the 1st.  The Stars out-shot them 13 to 8 in the 2nd.

The 3rd period started very up-tempo as each team tried to get the next goal.  Winger Claude Giroux had a prime scoring opportunity at the 6-minute mark but could not sneak it past Lehtonen on a bang-bang play.  At 10:37, the Flyers regained their 2-goal lead when Jeff Carter knocked in his own rebound.  It was his 25th goal of the season.  They cruised the rest of the way to earn another 2 points in the standings

Meszaros on his goal said, “It was a nice play by Ville (Leino), and he passed it to me…I was just a little bit patient and burst it in and I guess the goalie didn’t see it, so it just went in.”  He continued, “We have really good defensemen here, and everybody is trying to generate offense.  The main thing is defense for us, but every time we get a chance we go in up in a rush and try to create something.”

On the loss of intensity in the 2nd period, Meszaros said, “Last game (vs. Nashville) we didn’t do a very good job in the second period.  Today wasn’t that good, but I think it was better than last game.  I think every time you have a lead you want to protect it, but you don’t want to just sit back and wait for your opponent because they just generate something.  We just tried to play our game, we did and we scored our third goal and we won the game.”

The Flyers now have a 2-game winning streak.  This was the 2nd game of a 4-game home-stand.  Their next game is vs. the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday February 10th.
