On this night, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly.

Both teams were missing significant players for this big game.  The Flyers played without defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszaros who both missed the game because of lower body injuries.  The Wings’ injured list included defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, center Pavel Datsyuk, and goalie Jimmy Howard.

For this game, Joey MacDonald started in net for the Red Wings and Ilya Bryzgalov for the Flyers.

The Flyers possibly distracted from the memorable Mark Howe #2 banner ceremony came out a little flat and seemed a half-step slow.  Forward Henrik Zetterberg made them pay by scoring at 4:00 of the 1st period to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.  Flyers regained their composure as the period progressed and were able to tie it at 13:50 when winger Jakub Voracek banked it off of a Red Wing skate and in.  They then took a 2-1 lead when sniper Claude Giroux scored on the breakaway at 18:11.  The Flyers bounced back nicely from a slow start and were dominating the game by the end of this period.  Flyers led in shots 9 to 2 at the 1st intermission.

At around the 7:30 mark of the 2nd period, Wings defenseman Nicklas Kronwall had a huge hit on an unsuspecting Voracek.  Voracek looked dazed afterwards.  The hit jolted a Philly crowd that had been somewhat quiet.  Kronwall jumped up the Most Hated Hockey Player list in Philly because of this hit.  Forward Max Talbot increased the Flyers’ lead at 14:10 when he scored a shorthanded goal.  He knocked in a rebound off of a Giroux shot to give them a 3-1 lead.

Neither Jaromir Jagr or Voracek came out for the 3rd period.  Johan Franzen scored his 25th goal of the season for the Wings at 8:47.  It was just 3 seconds after a Wings power-play had ended.    The Flyers played a strong defensive game the rest of the game and Bryzgalov made a couple of nice saves to preserve the the 3-2 win.

On the Flyers pulling out the win after losing two more players, Giroux said, “Yeah, that is our story this year.  A lot of guys go down and you just gotta step up.  That’s one of the reasons we are in the position near the playoffs.  Guys like to step up when there’s guys down.  It was a great team effort.”

On the win, he said, “Bryz shut the door tonight when we had the lead and he has been great for us the last month. When he plays great it is motivation for everyone to step up and play our game. Tonight Detroit was missing guys too so it was a good test to see where we were standing. It was a big win at home. That is one thing we want to do good at the end of the year and that is get some big wins at home.”

The Flyers next game is Thursday at home vs. the Florida Panthers.
