The Philadelphia Flyers battled the New York Rangers in a crucial Game 3 and were defeated 4-1.  The Rangers now lead the series 2-1.

For this game, Henrik Lundqvist started in net for the Rangers and Ray Emery for the Flyers.

Flyers forward combinations:

Giroux-Voracek-Hartnell

Lecavalier-Simmonds-B.Schenn

Couturier-Read- Akeson

Hall-Raffl-Rinaldo

Flyers defensemen pairings:

Grossmann-Streit

Timonen-Coburn

L.Schenn-MacDonald

The Rangers struck quickly as Derek Stepan scored just 3:54 into the 1st period.  Emery could not corral the puck and Stepan was able to pounce on it and put it past him.  At 10:24, Martin St. Louis then put the Rangers up 2-0 as he deflected in a shot by Dan Girardi.  Emery was not impressive early on and the Flyers were again in an early hole.  Flyers defenseman Mark Streit scored on a 4-on-4 at 17:18 to finally get the orange and black on the scoreboard.  It was a nice feed from Jakub Voracek.  The Flyers had a slow start despite a ruckus home crowd.  They were able to recover and only trailed by one after one period.

Girardi quickly restored the Rangers 2-goal lead at 5:17 of the 2nd period.  He blasted it by Emery.  It was a shot Emery would probably want back.  The game then got a little physical as Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds started to hit everything and play a little reckless.  Voracek tussled with Ranger forward Carl Hagelin at 11:37.  The Flyers got two power-plays after that but could not convert on either of them.  They had their chances in the 2nd period but trailed by two goals.

Rangers forward Dan Carcillo came out of the penalty box and finished off a scoring play to make it 4-1 at 10:53 of the 3rd period.  It was a back-breaking goal.  Steve Mason replaced Emery in net at 12:45.  The Flyers offered little resistance the rest of the way.  Overall, it was a very disappointing game and effort by the Flyers in a very important game.

On his team’s inability to score with the man-advantage, Flyers head coach Craig Berube said, “On the power play I think we’ve got to move the puck quicker than we are. I think it’s too predictable with what we’re doing with Giroux and Timonen. We have to move it around more and get it in Voracek’s hands more. There are different things that we can to do and we will make some adjustments. But we had a lot of zone time with the puck. They did a good job with the puck, they had the puck, but we have to get it to the net and we didn’t. That’s the biggest problem. If you don’t get it to the net, you’re not going to score. Like I said, we have to fake, a little deception here and get them through.”

Berube on the game said, “You can’t get down 2-0 quick in the games like this. We were fortunate in game 2 to come back. We battled back hard. I thought we battled hard tonight. We gave ourselves the opportunity, but we need the better start.”

Game 4 is Friday at home.
