The Philadelphia Flyers came up small in another big game against the New York Rangers.  This time they lost at home to their rivals 5-2.

For this game, Henrik Lundqvist started in net for the Rangers and Ilya Bryzgalov for the Flyers.

Flyers forward combinations:
Giroux-McGinn-Voracek
Simmonds-B.Schenn-Hartnell
Talbot-Gagne-Read
Couturier-Fedontenko-Rinaldo

Flyers defensemen pairings:
Timonen-L.Schenn
Gervais-Coburn
Meszaros-Foster

The Rangers came out strong and had the Flyers on their heels right from the opening face-off.  Golaie Ilya Bryzgalov had to make a number of strong saves early on especially stoning forward Carl Hagelin on the breakaway to start the game.  They were able to solve him, however, at 14:54 of the 1st period when winger Rick Nash snapped it in.  Rangers led in shots 15 to 12 after one period.

The Rangers continued to control the game in the 2nd period as they scored two early goals to go up 3-0.  Brad Richards scored a power-play goal at 3:14 and Derek Stepan backhanded it in at 5:46.  Wayne Simmonds took a puck to the face on a clear by Luke Schenn in front of the net and left the game.  He returned and finally got the Flyers on the board at 18:53 when he scored on the power-play.

Jakub Voracek scored at 6:28 of the 3rd period to seemingly get the Flyers back into the game.  The puck deflected off of him and went in.  But the Rangers came right back as Nash scored again at 7:42 to put the Rangers up 4-2.  Chris Kreider banged in the Rangers 5th goal at 12:13.

Simmonds on the loss said, “I thought we kind of started off slow and then picked up steam. After that it was kind of downhill and we didn’t respond. They scored and kept going and scored 1, 2, and 3 and it took us until that third goal to finally push back. It wasn’t good enough.”

The Flyers’ next game is Thursday at home vs. the New York Islanders.

I’m impressed, I must say. Certainly rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. Your thought is outstanding; the problem is some thing that not enough folks are speaking intelligently about. I am really pleased that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
