The Adirondack Phantoms came back to their original home, Philadelphia, and claimed a solid all-around 4-1 victory over the Hershey Bears.  This game was played at the Wells Fargo Center.

Phantoms head coach Terry Murray on the Phantoms returning to Philly said, “The Flyers fans, to me, have always been the #1 fans in hockey.  The support here today – 15, 16, 17 thousand.  Whatever it was, was terrific.  It gives the adrenaline a little shot.  I think we saw that with some pretty good play today.”

For this game, Cal Heeter started in net for the Phantoms and David Leggio for the Bears.

The Phantoms got going early as winger Tyler Brown fired a shot over the shoulder of Leggio and in on an oddman rush at 2:56 of the 1st period to start the scoring.  Kris Newbury then made a beautiful pass to Tye McGinn who tapped it in to make it 2-0 at 7:00.  The Bears scored late in the period at 17:53 when Matt Watkins slipped a loose puck past Heeter.

The Bears changed goalies to start the 2nd period bringing in Philipp Grubauer.  There were a lot of scoring chances in the 1st period but not so much in the 2nd.  Neither team scored in this period and the action was much tenser between the two teams.  The Phantoms did have to do a lot of penalty-killing including an abbreviated 5-on-3 and a double minor.

Murray on the PK said, “The penalty-killing really stepped up.  We’ve had some difficulties in the last 3-4 games really.  Tonight I thought it was very, very good.”

The Phantoms got going again offensively in the 3rd period.  Forward Ben Holmstrom scored on the power-play at 5:29 of the 3rd period to restore the Phantoms 2-goal lead.  He claimed a loose puck in the crease and banged it by Grubauer.  Jason Akeson then snapped a high shot in at 8:35 to make it 4-1 to finish out the scoring.

The Phantoms coming into this game had lost 5 of their previous 6 games and were in danger of falling out of playoff contention.  They needed a strong, solid win and got it.

Their next game in Philadelphia is in three weeks on February 22 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.  It is a night game at 7:30pm.
