On New Year’s Eve, the Flyers defeated the Rangers 3-1 in the Alumni Game that is part of the Winter Classic festivities at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia for the next week.  In this light-hearted game, the Flyers took a 2-0 lead on goals by John LeClair and Shjon Podein.  The LeClair brought back memories of the 1990s for many of the Flyers faithful as Eric Lindros assisted on the goal.  Glenn Anderson then scored for the Rangers in the 2nd period.  Mark Howe closed the scoring by converting on a penalty-shot in the 3rd period.

The Flyers Alumni squad featured a stacked line-up from every era of the team’s history.  From the Stanley Cup years, there was Bernie Parent, Bob Clarke, Bill Barber, Reggie Leach, the Watson brothers, Bob Kelly, and Orest Kindrachuk.  From the 80s, there was Dave Poulin, Brian Propp, Howe, Terry Carkner, Rick Tocchet, and Brad Marsh.  From the 90s, there was Lindros, LeClair, Eric Desjardins, Chris Therien, and Podein.  From the recent era, there was Jeremy Roenick, Derian Hatcher, and Mark Recchi.

Though the game provided little drama, there was a lot of intrigue preceding the game as it was the return of the prodigal son in Eric Lindros.  He had had a falling out with the club in 2000 after a celebrated 8+ years with the team that included a Hart Trophy as league MVP and a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.

On his return, Lindros said, “It was just a great experience.  It was wonderful to go out to that ovation…It was really special.  It was a fun time.”
