The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-2 in one of their most exciting games of the season.  It was a rematch from one week earlier when the Flyers trounced the Sens 5-0 in Ottawa.  Flyers are 4-0-1 in their last 5 games.

For this game, Robin Lehner started in net for the Senators and Steve Mason for the Flyers.

Flyers forward combinations:
Giroux-Voracek-Hartnell
Lecavalier-Simmonds-B.Schenn
Couturier-Read-Downie
Hall-Rinaldo-Rosehill

Flyers defensemen pairings:
Grossmann-Streit
Timonen-L.Schenn
Coburn-Gustafsson

The Flyers had a lot of early jump and controlled much of the first half of the 1st period.  Later in the period, they had to fight off an odd 5-on-3 where they had two players in the box for shooting the puck into the crowd.  They were able to kill it off and carried some momentum from that.  Then they got a power-play of their own and quickly converted at 17:44.  Captain Claude Giroux had the goal.

The Flyers added to their lead at 5:18 in the 2nd period when Sean Couturier finally got his 1st goal of the season.  Flyers had a little let-up after that and the Sens struck quickly at 8:03 as Clarke MacArthur snapped it past Mason on the power-play to cut the lead to 2-1.  The game got a little rough later in this middle period as Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn and Sens forward Colin Greening dropped the gloves.  The Flyers led by a goal at the 2nd intermission.

The Sens got an early 3rd period power-play and Kyle Turris converted at 3:12 to tie the game.  Midway through the period with Mason down, Flyers defenseman Nicklas Grossmann made a phenomenal save with his foot to prevent a shot on an empty net.  The Flyers were on fire after this.  Defenseman Kimmo Timonen made a strong dash to the net and slipped it past Lehner at 11:30 to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead.  Wayne Simmonds then followed that up 23 seconds later with a goal of his own to make it 4-2.  At 14:54, Mason stoned Kyle Turris on a penalty-shot.  Adam Hall added an empty-net goal at the end to make it a 5-2 final score.

Flyers head coach Craig Berube on the win said, “You’re looking for your team to skate, and play the same for 60-minutes.  That’s what you want, no matter what.  Sometimes, you’re going to do that, not get a break and lose; but if you do that on a consistent basis you’ll probably win more than you lose.  So we’re looking exactly for that.  I don’t care if the score is 3-1 for the other team in the third period, or if we’re up 3-1, play the same way, get going.  Skate, get involved, get forechecking, put pucks on net. That’s what you want as a coach, you want your team to play the same way all of the time.”

The Flyers’ next game is on Thursday at home vs. the Buffalo Sabres.

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s challenging to get that
“perfect balance” between superb usability and visual

In addition, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Safari.
