The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Islanders 7-4 to clinch the Atlantic Division title and the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference.  The win also ended the Flyers 5-game losing streak.    This was the 6th of 6 meetings between the Flyers and the Islanders this season and the regular season finale for both teams.  The Flyers had won all 5 of the meetings they had played this season prior to this game.  For this game, Rick DiPietro started in net for the Islanders and Sergei Bobrovsky for the Flyers.

The Flyers came blasting out of the gate scoring 16 seconds into the 1st period.  Captain Mike Richards fed a pass to Kimmo Timonen in the slot and he blasted it in.  Then at 47 seconds, the Flyers made it 2-0 when Scott Hartnell scored on a breakaway.  It looked like another game where the Flyers would crush the Islanders.  But after a lapse in focus by the Flyers, the Isles were right back into the game.  At 7:03, the Isles got on the board when rookie forward Michael Grabner scored his 34th goal of the season.  He had stolen the puck at his own blue-line and went in on a breakaway.  The Isles then tied it 2-2 at 9:31 on the power-play when defenseman Travis Hamonic slapped it in.  The Flyers responded 19 seconds later when Danny Briere scored on a breakaway.  Isles forward Tavares then knocked in a loose puck at 12:05 to make it 3-3.  Boucher replaced Bob after this goal.  Play settled down after this.  The Isles led in shots 15-13 after one period of play.

At 53 seconds into the 2nd period, Tavares back-handed a pass across the crease that P.A. Parenteau put in to give the Isles their 1st lead of the game.  It was on the power-play.  The Flyers seeing the Atlantic Division crown slipping from their grasp re-grouped and tied the game at 4 when defenseman Andrej Meszaros scored at 8:00.  The Flyers then re-took the lead at 18:29 when Hartnell slipped a shot past DiPietro.  In a wild game, the Flyers led 5-4 after two periods of play with shots tied 25-25.

At 5:30 of the 3rd period, Boosh made a nice save on Tavares to preserve the lead.  Then at 8:15 he made another great snag on Grabner as he burst through the Flyers’ defense.  Meszaros scored again at 9:40 to put the Flyers up 6-4.  Darroll Powe added an empty-netter at 19:59 to close out the game and give the Flyers a 7-4 win.

On the upcoming playoffs and the win, Briere said, “It’s a new season.  You’re starting from scratch once again…To start the series nobody is ahead.  We start from the same point.  We have to find a way to get our confidence going once again but we should.  Yes, we’ve had a little slump lately but it’s better to have it before the playoffs start I guess.  It was also a good way to finish strong tonight.  What I liked is going into the third period leading by a goal.  You know, lately we’ve had the tendency to sit back and tonight we kept going at them.  We kept creating chances and that was really good to see.”

Their next game will be at home either Wednesday or Thursday.  It will be the first game of the playoffs.
