The Philadelphia Flyers returned home on this night and ended a three-game losing streak with a solid 5-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes

For this game, Dan Ellis started in net for the Hurricanes and Ilya Bryzgalov for the Flyers.

Flyers forward combinations:
Giroux-McGinn-Briere
Couturier-Knuble-Read
B.Schenn-Talbot-Voracek
Sestito-Rinaldo-Fedontenko

Flyers defensemen pairings:
Timonen-L.Schenn
Grossmann-Foster
Coburn-Gervais

It was a wide-open 1st period as neither team did a good job playing team defense.  The Flyers were able to tally two power-play goals in this period which was quite a feat for a team struggling to score goals.  Defenseman Kurtis Foster blasted one in at 5:08 and forward Danny Briere had the other at 15:25.  The Flyers were also able to get one even strength goal at 14:27 by Braydon Coburn while the Hurricanes got 1st period goals by Joni Pitkanen tied it at 8:47 and Eric Staal at 15:58.  Flyers led 3-2 at the 1st intermission.

The Flyers dominated the 2nd period adding another power-play goal and getting another even-strength goal just 52 seconds into the period when forward Mike Knuble stuffed it in.  Captain Claude Giroux scored the power-play goal at 12:43.  The Flyers seemed well in control after 2 periods as they led 5-2.

The Canes got an early 3rd period power-play goal by Patrick Dwyer at 3:29 to cut the Flyers’ lead to 5-3.  Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette then called a time-out to settle his team down.  It seemed to work as the Flyers played safe and preserved a 5-3 victory.

On the three power-play goals, Knuble said, “It was huge, our power play…we scored three goals, we had it going early; it was really good, it was what we needed, we were talking about better start better start. We were the ones who got the power play in the beginning, in the first ten minutes and took advantage of it and it really set us going. Then our power play snowballed from there.”

This was the first game of a 4-game home stand.  They host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday February 5th.

Giroux had a goal and an assist and 5 shots on goal
