The Philadelphia Flyers slipped by the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 on a goal by forward Matt Read with 18.6 seconds left in regulation.  It gave the Flyers their 3rd consecutive win.  It was also the first time for Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to face his former team.  He played for the Coyotes from 2007-08 season until the 2010-11 season.

Mike Smith started in net for the Coyotes and Bryzgalov for the Flyers.

Flyers forward combinations:
Giroux-Jagr-Hartnell
Briere-JVR-Simmonds
Talbot-Read-Voracek
Couturier-Rinaldo-Zolnierczyk

Flyers defensemen pairings:
Pronger-Carle
Timonen-Coburn
Meszaros-Lilja

The Flyers had to kill off a double-minor for high-sticking on Dan Briere starting at 7:10 of the 1st period.  They were very strong in front of Bryzgalov limiting any quality scoring chances.  It was mostly a quiet period both on and off the ice.  There were a lot of empty seats and the fans who were there were mostly quiet.  On the ice, neither team seemed to be able to get going.  Flyers Jaromir Jagr only played 1:22 (3 shifts) before leaving with a lower body injury.  He did not return.  After one period of play, the Coyotes led in shots 16 to 12.

The Flyers got some sustained pressure midway through the 2nd period with defenseman Chris Pronger launching two blasts from the blue-line.  The Coyotes however held their ground and were able to clear the zone.  At 12:37, JVR and Kimmo Timonen had a 2-on-1 odd-man breakaway.  JVR took the shot and scored past Smith to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.  At 14:06, a bad turnover by Flyers Andrej Meszaros led to a breakaway for Coyotes Ray Whitney but Bryz made a great save.  The Flyers dominated this period after a lethargic 1st period.  They out-shoot the Coyotes 17 to 6 and scored the game’s only goal in this period.

The Coyotes tied the game at 3:38 of the 3rd period when Mikkel Boedker banged it past Bryzgalov.  It’s a goal Bryz should want back.  The Coyotes came back in this period after playing a lot of the 2nd on their heels.  With the game seemingly headed to overtime, Flyers Matt Read then stunned the Coyotes at 19:41 when he got the puck in the slot and slapped it in to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.  The Flyers held on for the victory.

Flyers captain Chris Pronger on the win said, “You need to play in those tight games and know how to win them. We’ve had games where we have lost leads late and lost in the shoot out or overtime, whatever the case may be. We lost the lead in the third period but we really stuck with it and really pressed. We stuck with the system with their team that plays really tight and structured. We needed to use our speed and get in and create some offense. And that’s how we scored our goal to win.”

The Flyers now have points in eight consecutive games.  Their next game is Saturday at Winnipeg vs. the Jets.
