58th NHL All-star Game in Raleigh

It was a very enthusiastic weekend in Raleigh with the crowds attending the Fan Fest at the Raleigh Convention Center.  The hospitality and the friendliness of the people was refreshing.  With home town players Eric Staal (captain of one team), goaltender Cam Ward and eighteen-year old rookie Jeff Skinner the Hurricanes fans were pumped up.

First Period Highlights:

Starting line ups: Team Staal: goaltender Cam Ward, Rick Nash, Mike Green, Zdeno Chara, Eric Staal and Corey Perry.  For Team Lidstrom: Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, Steven Stamkos, Brad Richards, Martin St. Louis, Shea Weber and Nicklas Lidstrom.

40 seconds in Eric Staal is stopped by Marc-Andre Fleury on a breakaway.  At 0:50 shot by Alex Ovechkin is a goal with Ryan Kesler screening in front.  1:22 Danny Briere has a chance but Cam Ward makes a glove save as he cuts in front of the goal.  2:48 Goal by Paul Stastny from a two-on-one tap in.  Patrik Elias goal through the five-hole alone in front at 3:20 for Team Staal.  4:10 Steven Stamkos hits the post.  Claude Giroux scores at 5:41 as he breaks in front.

Anze Kopitar goal for Team Lidstrom at 10:50 with nice backhander over the shoulder of Cam Ward. Goal at 13:17by Dustin Byfuglien to make it 4-2.  Loui Erikson scores at 16:07 from the right side of the net for Team Lidstrom.  Matt Duchene at 16:30 scores on a break over the stick-side to tie the game at 4-4.  Patrick Sharp stoned by Marc-Andre Fleury at 17:18 from in the crease.

Second Period Highlights:

New goaltenders: Carey Price in goal for Team Staal and Jonas Hiller in goal for Team Lidstrom to start the second period.

2:18 score by Patrick Sharp to give Team Staal a 5-4 lead.  Kris Letang at 6:10 wrist shot hits post and scores to make it 6-4. 9:18 Jonathan Toews hits the cross-bar on a breakaway.  Two-on-none breakaway at 10:08 Anze Kopitar scores for team Lidstrom to make it 6-5.   Stamkos ties the game up at 14:11 when goes short side against Price.  Danny Briere gives Team Lidstrom the lead at 15:31 on a sharp angle shot.

Third Period Highlights:

New goaltenders:  Team Staal- Henrik Lunquist and Team Lidstrom-Tim Thomas.  Erik Staal at 3:49 scores on a break away to tie the game at 7-7.  6:13 penalty shot awarded after Alex Ovechkin throws his stick at puck.  Matt Duchene shot saved by Henrik Lunquist.

Kris Letang goal from in front at 8:46 gives Team Staal 8-7 lead.  Danny Briere’s second goal at 9:57 reties the game at 8-8.  10:45 Jonathan Toews goal gives Team Lidstrom a 9-8 lead.  Martin St. Louis scores at 13:53 when his shot pops over Henrik Lundqust to make it 10-8 Lidstrom.

Rick Nash brought Team Staal back to within one goal scoring at 15:11 to make it 10-9 but Loui Eriksson scored an empty net goal when Team Staal pulled their goaltender at 18:49. Captain Eric Staal scored with 34 seconds left but time ran out and Team Lidstrom held on for the 11-10 win.

Former Flyer, now Chicago Blackhawk Patrick Sharp was awarded the MVP scoring one goal and two assists.   Flyers Danny Briere had two goals and Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist.

NHL Notes:

Commissioner Gary Bettman gave a press conference and talked about the question of concussions and said that it was still too early to announce where the next Winter Classic would be held.
